These teachings left marks, shaping not only how I and many other women see themself, but also how love, freedom, and identity are understood. My artwork, “Bound by Judgement”, explores the shame that is imposed on women who fail to adhere to impossible standards and the judgment that they face when they rebel against them. In this acrylic and ink art piece that’s on a bristol board, symbolism flows through it. The skull with horns, the placement of its dark hands, and the women's facial expression symbolize a sexual act being performed and in hand, suggesting a form of rebellion. The fading bright yellow halo above the woman and the growing horns on her head depict a departure from innocence. This juxtaposition of these symbols reveals the duality of how society views women- both idealized like a pure angel and demonized as a sinner. The yellow-colored ring surrounding both figures helps enforce the narrative of the purity culture as it captures the resemblance of a purity ring upheld in the Christian religion. Lastly, the white wings represent the purity culture's expectation, as well as its limitations. The grand inspiration, in addition to personal experience, is also drawn from the song Me and the Devil by Soapskin, which speaks of the complex relationship of temptation, guilt, and autonomy. Just as the song explores internal struggles between desire and shame, my artwork portrays the tension between societal judgment and the personal freedom to reject imposed identities. Through this artwork, I aim to critique the societal forces that constrain women to these harmful ideologies while also creating space for reflection and resistance.
